Well, we know it’s been in the shape of a future two-story glass cube for quite some time now. ![]() For some reason, there’s been a rash of stories lately stating how the new Apple Store on Chicago’s Magnificent Mile is taking shape. As the interior steps down to the river, it acts as a seating space around the Forum – the hub of Today at Apple and a live source of creativity, education and entertainment. The Apple Store on Chicago’ Magnificent Mile, at 401 North Michigan Avenue. It passes through the building’s walls – dematerialized to pure glass – and connects to the store’s buzzing center, sheltered by an impossibly thin carbon fiber roof, supported on slender stainless-steel columns. The stairway transitions seamlessly between the outside and inside. ![]() The gentle descent of levels creates active spaces where people can connect, create, and experience the city and river together. Apple Michigan Avenue sits atop a wide new public stair, created to lead down from the plaza to the river. It is the spot where Point de Sable – the founding father of Chicago – first lived and worked. Pioneer Court is an urban plaza steeped in Chicago history. It unites a historic city plaza that had been cut off from the water, giving Chicago a dynamic new arena that flows effortlessly down to the river.” – Sir Jonathan Ive “ Apple Michigan Avenue is about removing boundaries between inside and outside, reviving important urban connections within the city. The project reflects Apple’s commitment to the cities and communities it inhabits, and is the result of a close collaboration between the design team at Apple led by chief design officer, Sir Jonathan Ive and Angela Ahrendts, senior vice president of Retail and Online Stores and Foster + Partners. Located at the intersection of the Chicago River and North Michigan Avenue’s ‘Magnificent Mile’, Apple Michigan Avenue cascades down from Pioneer Court to the river’s edge, creating new connections between the city and the river. The project successfully opened in 2009 and welcomes several hundred-thousand shoppers and visitors each year.Inspired by the pulse of Chicago’s artistic energy, Apple has created a new platform for performance in a city charged by music. Zubatkin’s services also included monitoring the project design, construction and approvals. Through the careful peeling back of layers of history and the sensitive restoration of the cube, Apple Fifth Avenue. In evaluating this unique proposal from Apple, the Brandt Organization brought in Zubatkin to help assess and structure the corresponding lease provisions, including the circumstances of a default and the responsibilities of the tenant in the event of the lease’s termination. ![]() Designed by Bohlin Cywinski Jackson, the new Apple Store included a full glass-enclosed structure, spiral glass staircase and a notable street presence. In soliciting a tenant, they received and accepted a proposal from Apple that involved the demolition of the existing structure and the development of a new retail building. The Brandt Organization, a major real estate landowner, was looking for a tenant for a prominent corner site they own on the Upper West Side. ![]()
